Basic concepts

To get a better understanding of the Image Retrieval System this section will explain some basic concepts that will be useful for the usage of the Image Retrieval System.

What do we mean by labels?

Figure 1 explains what we mean by a label. The labels are the strings to the left and right of the image (figure 1a). An image can have several labels and the same label can be on several different images.

What do we mean with outlines

Look at figure 1b to see what we mean by outlines

How does the search engine work?

The search engine is a simple string-matching algorithm that searches all the labels from the image database. The image database is a collection of all labels from the Digital Atlas

How can I use the FM in the Image Retrieval System?

When browsing through the FM tree you can select a node and then ask the system to show all the labels are associated with this node. For example, if you select the heart in the FM and ask the IRS to show all labels that associated with the heart the IRS will compare all the children of the heart node to the existing labels and display the labels that match a children of the heart.
